Iowa Loose Meat Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Soft hamburger buns
- Optional toppings: sliced pickles, mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, cheese
Instructions:
Cook the beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Add the chopped onion and cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
Season the beef: Add the mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Add broth: Pour the beef broth into the skillet and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid reduces and the beef mixture is flavorful but still slightly juicy.
Prepare the buns: Toast the hamburger buns lightly if you prefer, or leave them soft.
Assemble the sandwich: Spoon the loose meat mixture onto the bottom half of the buns. Add your favorite toppings, like sliced pickles, mustard, ketchup, or cheese.
Serve: Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately with chips, fries, or coleslaw.
