Arkansas Fried Bologna Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of bologna (thicker slices preferred)
- 2 slices of white bread (or buns)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for frying)
- 1 slice of American cheese (optional)
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- Pickles or onions (optional)
- Black pepper (to taste)
Instructions:
Heat the skillet:
- Place a skillet over medium heat and add the butter to melt.
Fry the bologna:
- Make a few small slits around the edges of the bologna slices to prevent them from curling while frying.
- Place the bologna slices in the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are nicely browned and slightly crispy around the edges.
Add cheese (optional):
- If you like a cheese-topped sandwich, add a slice of American cheese on top of the bologna during the last minute of frying, allowing it to melt.
Prepare the bread:
- While the bologna is frying, lightly toast the bread (optional) or leave it soft for a traditional feel.
- Spread mustard and mayonnaise on one or both slices of bread.
Assemble the sandwich:
- Place the fried bologna on the prepared bread, add any optional toppings like pickles or onions, and season with black pepper.
Serve:
- Cut the sandwich in half and serve with chips or a side of coleslaw for a classic Southern meal.
