Ingredients

For the Donair Meat:

  • 2 lbs (900 g) ground beef
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • ½ cup fine bread crumbs

For the Donair Sauce:

  • 1 can (10 oz) evaporated milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

For Serving:

  • 4 large pita breads
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Donair Sauce

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milksugarvinegar, and garlic powder.
  2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

Step 2: Make the Donair Meat

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beefonion powdergarlic powderoreganopaprikasaltblack pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Add the bread crumbs and mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  3. Form the mixture into a tightly packed loaf shape (about 8 inches long).

Step 3: Cook the Donair Meat

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the formed meatloaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for about 90 minutes or until cooked through.
  4. Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing thinly.

Step 4: Assemble the Donairs

  1. Warm the pita breads slightly in a pan or microwave to make them pliable.
  2. Layer sliced donair meat inside each pita.
  3. Top with diced tomatoes and onions.
  4. Drizzle generously with donair sauce.
