For the Donair Meat:
- 2 lbs (900 g) ground beef
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- ½ cup fine bread crumbs
For the Donair Sauce:
- 1 can (10 oz) evaporated milk
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 1 tsp garlic powder
For Serving:
- 4 large pita breads
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 1 small onion, diced
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Donair Sauce
- In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sugar, vinegar, and garlic powder.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
Step 2: Make the Donair Meat
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- Add the bread crumbs and mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Form the mixture into a tightly packed loaf shape (about 8 inches long).
Step 3: Cook the Donair Meat
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the formed meatloaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for about 90 minutes or until cooked through.
- Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing thinly.
Step 4: Assemble the Donairs
- Warm the pita breads slightly in a pan or microwave to make them pliable.
- Layer sliced donair meat inside each pita.
- Top with diced tomatoes and onions.
- Drizzle generously with donair sauce.
